Darlington station opening delayed

Rising costs are causing construction delays at the £140m project, pushing the completion date back from December to spring next year.

The overhaul was split into two phases of work, with Willmott Dixon handing over the newly constructed eastern concourse to Network Rail in November 2024.

This phase of work also included a 650-space multi-storey car park, also being constructed by Willmott Dixon.

Phase two, which is now encountering delays, consists of internal works at the existing station with Aecom as the designer and BAM the main contractor.

Darlington’s station project also includes two new platforms, a transport interchange, and an improved western entrance.

The redevelopment is being delivered in a partnership with the Tees Valley Mayor and Combined Authority, Network Rail, LNER and Darlington Council.

Canopy works on the new platform and works on the MSCP are still ongoing, while the fit-out of the new station is almost complete.
