Plans in for £200m Gresham revamp
Plans have now been submitted by property developers iMpeC and Buccleuch Property for the Middlesbrough regen scheme, which includes more than 230 BTR homes and a 450-bed PBSA block.
Wates is the contractor on the project, regarded as a flagship element of Middlesbrough’s regeneration masterplan.
Subject to planning permission and board approval from Middlesbrough Development Corporation, which was established by Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen to focus on the town centre, Middlehaven and the Zetland Historic Quarter, work could start this summer.
Fairfield by Marriott is already in discussions to open a 200-room hotel at the corner of Borough Road near Union Street and Hartington Road, with Wates once again the contractor.
Neil McMillan, iMpeC Director, said: “The submission of our planning application marks a significant milestone for the Gresham project, reflecting months of engagement with local residents, businesses, and key stakeholders.
“Our vision remains focused on delivering high-quality housing and accommodation, comparable to the best in other towns and cities, with the goal of attracting and retaining talented individuals to Middlesbrough.
“This is essential for the town’s future prosperity and for supporting the growth of local businesses. The Gresham project has the potential to play a transformative role in shaping Middlesbrough’s future success.”
Mayor of Tees Valley Ben Houchen said: “This incredible development is proof of how our Development Corporation is making a huge difference to the future of Middlesbrough town centre.
“This site has stood empty and unloved for far too long but in just a short space of time we have helped support this project which would see the biggest one-off investment in Middlesbrough in living memory.”
