Durham council to move to Rivergreen Centre

Plans submitted by IC Planning to construct an entrance lobby and a two-storey extension to the building have been approved, as part of the wider Aykley Heads redevelopment programme.

Alongside the council, the project team also includes GT3 Architects, Identity Consult, and Narro.

The first floor of the Rivergreen Centre will be used as council office space, while the ground floor will consist of meeting rooms and event space for civic functions.

A full internal fit-out will be undertaken, as well as external landscaping and the car park will be reconfigured to provide space for 106 vehicles.

The decision follows budget approval for £159m of property investments, including £2.9m earmarked for the demolition of the current County Hall and £2.5m for investment into Aykley Heads.

The council plans to demolish its County Hall building, located at the Aykley Heads development, in 2026, with the intention that a new building is constructed to fit in with the innovation hub.
