Durham probes Leadgate housing

Hedley Planning has submitted a pre-application screening request for a 290-home development on behalf of Iveston Developments and the council, to assess whether the site needs a full environmental impact assessment.

The 55-acre site sits on the edge of the County Durham village, and is bordered by residential and industrial developments as well as the Leadgate Bypass (A692).

Leadgate is situated to the north east of Consett, and both were historically mining towns.

As well as almost 300 homes, the proposed development would include a new primary school to replace the village’s current one, with a car park, play yard, and sports pitch.

Architect Ergo has worked on the project so far, drawing up the indicative site plan.

An area of woodland will be retained, and the wider development would have areas of open space and SuDs.

House types would range from two-bed bungalows, two- to three-bed semi-detached, and three- to four-bed detached homes.
