Durham set to greenlight 850 homes
With three schemes recommended for approval at its planning meeting next week, the council is set to consider schemes in Brandon, Ushaw Moor, and – back for the fourth time but under a new application – Barratt’s phase six of Whitworth Park in Spennymoor.
First up is a hybrid application for full permission for 140 homes and landscaping and outline permission for up to 260 homes, a 4,000 sq ft retail centre, and a mini-mobility hub designed to make it easier for people to connect between different modes of travel and reduce car-dependency.
It is being brought forward by Barratt Homes and the trustees of land at Red Barns in Brandon. The 95-acre plot is located at the western edge of the settlement cluster of Brandon, Browney, and Meadowfield, and to the south of the A690.
To the north, west, and east of the site are open agricultural fields, with an existing farm known as Red Barns located at the northern boundary.
Next up is Miller Homes’ application for 158 homes on land to the south of Cockhouse Lane in Ushaw Moor.
Measuring 21 acres, the site is currently agricultural land. The development would be a mix of bungalows and two storey houses, each with their own parking areas and private back-gardens.
And finally for housing applications at this meeting is Barratt Homes’ application for phase six of Whitworth Park (also known as Burton Woods) in Spennymoor.
Rejected three times already by the council, the application was last rejected in March over a lack of pedestrian and transport options within the site, which the council argued would lead to a reliance on cars.
Barratt has now created a new application for the 34-acre plot of land that is north of Barratt Homes’ existing phase five development at Whitworth Park, which is already built.
The project team includes DPP Planning, Pod Architects, and SLR carried out the landscape strategy.
The site is located around 1.5km from Spennymoor centre, 11km south of Durham and 7km east of Bishop Auckland, the site is accessed from Whitworth Road and links to the A1 and A167.
