Gateshead consults on MetroGreen
Members of the public can comment on proposals for the 525-acre mixed-use community by the Metrocentre until 7 November.
The project aims to deliver around 1,000 homes, up to 275,000 sq ft of leisure space, a hotel, extensive green spaces, and improved transport links.
Supported by Mott MacDonald and Gillespies, the scheme will be delivered in phases with key elements including major improvements to pedestrian and cycle access, new public open spaces, and a continuous riverside route along the south bank of the River Tyne.
A comprehensive green infrastructure network will connect new and existing neighbourhoods, integrating open spaces with water and flood management systems, while public transport infrastructure will be upgraded with enhancements made to the road network to manage traffic from the new development.
The area extends from the River Tyne to the north to the A1 to the south, Dunston to the east and the River Derwent and Derwenthaugh Road to the west, and has been identified as a brownfield site intended for a sustainable community in the current Gateshead Local Plan.
Gateshead Council has been working on the scheme since 2012 and has now drawn up the Area Action Plan, ready for consultation by the public.
