Green light for contested Persimmon site

The housebuilder’s plans for 69 homes in Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough, were recommended for refusal back in April but have been given the go-ahead by the government.

York-headquartered Persimmon can now push on with a plot within the wider Nunthorpe Grange housing area, on the north west of the Al1043 Nunthorpe Bypass.

Originally, the plans received objections over whether suitable active travel provisions had been provided.

Although planning officers had no problem with the development in principle, it was noted: “The development of this site in isolation does not give priority first to pedestrian and cycle movements…

“The proposed link is long, convoluted, lacks natural surveillance and is considered to be unsafe. It does not promote and provide an attractive sustainable travel option for residents as an alternative to private car journeys.”

Persimmon, who will be delivering the new homes under its Charles Church brand, now says a new bus stop and network of pedestrian and cycle routes will be included.

A Persimmon Teesside spokesperson said: “We’re pleased that we can now look to move forward in delivering high-quality new homes for local homebuyers.

“This site was allocated for housing in the Local Plan and will provide a mix of house sizes.

“In addition to a range of sustainability and Active Travel measures onsite, £1.5m will be contributed towards local housing and infrastructure.

“We look forward to working with the Council and local community to bring these plans to fruition.”
