Middlesbrough approves Capital&Centric plan
The council has given the green light to a partnership with the developer, meaning the 3,400-home scheme in Middlehaven can now progress.
£3.6m of the council’s Towns Fund allocation from government will be used to allow Capital&Centric to develop develop designs for the scheme up to RIBA Stage 4, and to enable the procurement of a main contractor.
The masterplan includes houses and apartments delivered in the area around the Old Town Hall and towards the waterfront, to cater to the town’s rapidly expanding young professional demographic, as well as public space, leisure and retail offerings.
The vision for Middlehaven is to take brownfield sites that have become a ‘visual burden’ in the town and separate them into three main areas that would form new neighbourhoods.
These will accommodate around 760, 1250, and 1,400 homes respectively.
Speaking at the meeting, Mayor Cooke said: “This is a proper, council-led project with a credible partner who has done this before.
“I am excited not only to see how this project develops, but to see how we can include people from Middlesbrough. It’s truly a project for the whole town.”
