Milestone reached at Mackie’s Corner

The retail units at the family-owned Sunderland landmark are now fully let, following its £2m restoration.

Home to 28 independent businesses, the final two lettings were secured by Ashbrooke Home and deli Crave.

Owner Kirtley is now planning to focus on refurbishing its basement space into a photography studio and event space.

The grade two-listed building was originally constructed in 1845.

Alex Kirtley, director at Kirtley, said: “Since the renovated building opened its doors in 2021, we have seen 28 businesses invest in the city centre, providing a real lift to the high street and the wider city economy.”

Cllr Kevin Johnston, cabinet member for housing, business and regeneration, said: “Over recent years, tens of millions of pounds have been spent on preserving and redeveloping some of our city’s most cherished, historic buildings and Mackie’s Corner is one of the finest examples of this.”
