Morgan Sindall tops up Middlesbrough College work
The contractor has begun a £1.4m retrofit project to install two workshops within an existing building, following on from delivering a £12m technical training centre for the education provider.
The newly created workshops will have mezzanine floors, allowing for a teaching space within the operational environment where students can remain in PPE.
Construction also includes installing an additional classroom on the building’s first floor, soundproofing upgrades to the library, and segregation walls within the motor vehicle workshops.
The project is designed to increase the college’s student capacity and course offering.
Work on the project is scheduled to complete in November, with the college remaining in use throughout construction activity.
Rather than creating a full site set-up with extra cabins, Morgan Sindall Construction North East is using spaces within the college for its operations, in an attempt to make its onsite work as sustainable as possible.
The company recently completed work on a £12m engineering technical training centre at the college, creating a 32,000 sq ft, two-storey building with the capacity to train more than 1,000 people per year.
Alex Isted, area director for Morgan Sindall Construction in the North East and Cumbria, said: “Creating opportunities to upskill the next generation of construction professionals is central to our ethos as a business, and as such we’re really pleased to be onsite for this second project with Middlesbrough College.
“Expanding and redeveloping existing space into a new educational suite allows us to creatively and sustainably deliver high-quality facilities which will give young people the best learning opportunities.”
Zoe Lewis, principal and chief executive of Middlesbrough College Group said: “We offer a significant suite of Construction programmes within the college and this additional space will allow us to train more young people in the key skills that will help them attain job roles within the region.”
