Newcastle College Energy Academy plans progress
A demolition request has been submitted to North Tyneside Council for the removal of the Shepherd Offshore building adjacent to the college, to make way for a £8.5m educational facility to boost the region’s credentials as a green energy hotspot.
Funding for the project will come from the North East Combined Authority’s Investment Zone grant, with the £8,488,000 approved in June last year.
Newcastle College Energy Academy is a specialist renewable, subsea, and offshore engineering facility that works with businesses in the Tyne Powered cluster to provide specialist skills, training, and apprenticeships.
The new building will form a new energy campus, and will deliver skills skills training for the offshore, renewable, and green energy industries on the River Tyne Economic Corridor, with the expectation of attracting further private investment into key development sites.
Fairhurst submitted the demolition application on behalf of applicant Shepherd Offshore Group and indicated demolition could take place at the end of March, concluding in March next year.
Located close to the Wallsend Metro station in North Tyneside, the site is next to Swans Energy Park, a former shipyard with a deep-water quay.
Nearby Neptune and Offshore Technology Parks are also considered to be potential sites for further investment and development by offshore energy and marine businesses.
