Progress update | Pilgrim’s Quarter

Photos taken between 2023 and this year show advances that have been made in Newcastle’s city centre regeneration scheme, primarily the progress achieved on the HMRC building.

Commercial, town planning and project management services on the project are provided by Avison Young with architectural design by Ryder Architecture and engineering input by Cundall. The contractor is Bowmer and Kirkland.

The developer is on course to hand over the project in Q4 2025, for fit-out works.

The above photo, taken in December 2023, shows the 463,000 sq ft  office, which stands at between six and nine storeys tall, wrapping around a complete city block fronting Pilgrim Street, Market Street, New Bridge Street West, and John Dobson Street.

Bowmer + Kirkland topped out the building in October 2024.

The regional centre will provide office space for approximately 9,000 HMRC staff and will be the largest of all its centres.

Fast forward to January 2025, and the pace of the development is clear.

Chris Turnbull, principal at Avison Young and project manager on the scheme said: “Completion of the steelwork, tying in the listed Carliol House façade has allowed the building to be fully enclosed, whilst internally good progress has been made upon the comprehensive mechanical and engineering systems.”

Paul Anderson, contracts manager at the main contractor, Bowmer and Kirkland, said. “It has been a fantastic 12 months for the project, particularly with the regeneration of Carliol House façade which can now be seen in all its glory.

“The building is becoming a landmark structure within the city and with the envelope practically complete we can now focus on the remaining floor plate fit outs and the main systems commissioning.”
