Regeneration Brainery becomes Place North’s first charity partner

Championing a diverse and more modern built environment has always been a focus for Place North. Now, we’re partnering with Regeneration Brainery to accelerate change to make our industry more representative of the world in which it operates.

Regeneration Brainery is a not-for-profit organisation that addresses both the skills gap and the need for diversity in the property industry by working with young people from under-represented backgrounds to encourage them to pursue careers in the built environment. It does this through a mixture of workshops, networking sessions, and site visits.

More than 4,000 young people from across the UK are involved in the Regeneration Brainery programme each year. Having started in 2017, the impact of Regeneration Brainery’s efforts is already being felt – with many of their ‘Brainees’ currently working in the built environment.

“Regeneration Brainery is the go-to not-for-profit working to create a more diverse property industry,” said the charity’s Michele Steel. “There’s a skills gap facing the industry that needs more young people with more relevant, creative ideas, and voices to be involved.

“We’ve worked with thousands of young people from under-represented backgrounds so far, giving them a taste of the property industry’s vast career options through our week-long workshops, connections to leading industry mentors, and securing them proper, hands-on work experience, internships and apprenticeships,” Steel continued.

“Being Place North’s charity partner gives us incredible access to the legions of Place subscribers, partners, and party-goers. We want as many people within the industry to join us and change the face of the industry for the better. Place North gives us a great platform to do that.”

Dino Moutsopoulos, managing partner and head of commercial at Place North, said: “We have always felt that Place sits in the heart of the property community and as such, this partnership represents a fantastic opportunity to showcase and shine a light on how the property sector can increase the diversity in its sector.

“Through a number of existing and new initiatives Place North media group is excited to highlight the unique opportunities Regeneration Brainery delivers to support young people interested in working in our sector,” he continued.

“The whole team at Place is excited to be making a difference by actively supporting and creating opportunities to change the sector for the better- so that the property sector better reflects the people living, working, and using our buildings, towns, and cities.

“I look forward to working with Michele and her team over the coming year and I urge all Place clients, subscribers and stakeholders to reach out and support Regeneration Brainery.”

In addition to Place, other groups working with Regeneration Brainery include Homes England, Capital&Centric, Bowmer+Kirkland, Bruntwood, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, BDP, Fairhursts Design Group, Civic Engineers, J3 Advisory, Avison Young, HUB Residential, and Shoosmiths.

Here’s what they have to say about working with Regeneration Brainery:

Jack Bristow, managing director of J3 Advisory: “We believe that true progress stems from a diverse and inclusive workforce. Our support for the Regeneration Brainery charity is driven by a shared vision: to draw in bright, passionate minds from different backgrounds, and make them more representative of our society.  Far too often, the opportunities within the property space go unnoticed by young individuals. The Regeneration Brainery does a commendable job of bridging this gap, providing aspiring talent with a foothold in the industry, while offering businesses access to exceptional potential.”

Katrina Davis, director of communications at Civic Engineers: “It is absolutely crucial that we improve diversity within the industry and make it more attractive to young people from more diverse backgrounds, it’s also important that we work together to address the skills shortages that we face. The more diverse our teams are, the more we can ensure our towns and cities are designed for everyone. Regeneration Brainery is doing an incredible job helping to tackle these issues and is making a huge difference. We love working with them!”

Nicola Rudman, strategic business development associate director at Fairhursts Design Group: “FDG has worked with Regeneration Brainery on numerous occasions because we believe investment in the next generation is imperative. It is a great way to help promote the industry to students who wouldn’t always think of a career within construction and property. It is important to inspire and help develop their aspirations; it helps us all to strive for better and push the boundaries within our disciplines. The engagement with students isn’t just a one-off chat; there are opportunities through the Regeneration Brainery’s coffee mornings and boot camps to help build relationships and confidence which help the students develop and shape their path for study and/or work.”

Kate Brown, head of marketing at HUB Residential: “Regeneration Brainery provides outstanding access to the real estate industry to young people who might not otherwise get these opportunities. We proudly supported their efforts to bring a group to the UKREiiF conference, and also hosted a group at our offices. Both activities were well-organised and gave our team an opportunity to share their expertise and support the younger generation in starting a career within real estate. We hope to collaborate more in the future!”
