River Island update for Metrocentre store
The fashion brand has started work on the 26,000 sq ft refurbishment of its largest shop in the North East.
Located on Red Mall, the updates will include digital fitting rooms, where customers can use touchscreen technology to request new sizes or styles.
The refurbishment will be carried out in stages, so the store will stay open throughout.
Metrocentre is located on the former site of Dunston Power Centre and was designed by architect Ronald Chipcase of International Design Group and built by Cameron Hall Developments. Opened in 1986, it is one of the largest shopping centres in the UK.
Other high profile investors at the Metrocentre include Zara, Mango, Footasylum, and Frasers Group, all of which have undergone store fits in the last year.
Ben Cox, director at Sovereign Centros from CBRE, asset manager of Metrocentre, commented: “This investment highlights Metrocentre’s position as the premier destination in the North East for visitors, and our active leasing programme for Red Mall, bringing together the best in high street retail.”
Gemma Scarfe, digital & marketing director at River Island, said: “Gateshead is a prime location that aligns perfectly with our brand, and we are excited to unveil the new look to our customers.”
