Robertson lined up for £36m Ashington town centre revamp

The contractor has been appointed by Advance Northumberland to build the Portland Park development, a key part of the wider Regenerating Ashington programme.

The scheme will feature five cinema screens, two restaurant units, and a family-orientated ‘competitive socialising’ space.

It is expected to draw between 125,000 and 157,000 visits a year, boosting footfall and extending the town’s evening and weekend economy.

Planning consent was secured last year. Independent operator REEL Cinemas will run the venue, which is set to be the only ‘first-run’ cinema between Edinburgh and Blyth.

The project has been procured via the Procure Partnerships Framework and is funded by the UK Government’s Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, Northumberland County Council, and its development arm Advance Northumberland.

Alongside the cinema scheme, the Wansbeck Square Gateway project is also moving forward, with works due to begin this summer.

The scheme will create a new arrival point for Ashington rail station, including an accessible route to the high street, public realm works, and improved access to the Memorial Garden.

Neil Kennedy, regional managing director, Robertson Construction North East, commented: “We have been chosen to play an important role in the ongoing regeneration of Ashington, creating a high-quality development that will boost vibrancy, footfall, and local spending.

“Projects like this have the potential to transform a community, and we look forward to delivering meaningful local benefits throughout the process that contribute to the town’s long-term growth.”

Cllr Richard Wearmouth, cabinet member for business, growth and regeneration, said: “The cinema and leisure complex represents a significant investment in Portland Park, strengthening the town centre as a destination for entertainment, dining, and socialising.

“It’s a real vote of confidence for Ashington, building on the wider regeneration in the area including a new rail station and passenger rail line and a new college.”
