Royal Victoria extension set for greenlight

At its meeting on Friday, Newcastle City Council is set to approve plans for an urgent treatment centre on the grounds of the hospital.

Plans submitted by the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust also include access, parking, and landscaping details.

Robertson Construction is lined up as the contractor, and the wider project team includes P+HS Architects, planning consultant DPP, Turner & Townsend, TGA Consulting Engineers, and WSP.

Plans were lodged with the council last December, and outline a predominantly one-storey building, located on the existing A&E raised deck between the New Victoria and Leazes Wings, and the multi-storey car park, with a lower-ground service level.

The ground floor will have almost 11,000 sq ft of floor area, and around 1,600 sq ft on the lower level.

The A&E deck is a steel podium deck sitting above a service road which runs beneath it leading into the lower floor of the hospital, with the proposed UTC aiming to relieve pressure on the existing facilities and improve the triage process for patients.

It follows government proposals set out in November 2020, that determined a long-term investment programme in public service infrastructure, to include hospitals, schools, and prisons.
