Work is underway on the £30m North East Space Skills and Technology Centre, with steelworks having started on site.

The engineering company is delivering the project on behalf of Northumbria University, with work to include a demolition, new-build, and extension of its Wynne Jones building at Newcastle city campus.

Designed by Ryder Architecture, the 59,000 sq ft NESST building will provide satellite manufacturing clean rooms, advanced prototyping laboratories, a Mission Operations Centre, teaching laboratories, and collaborative spaces for work with companies in the space manufacturing supply chain.

Meanwhile, work to the Wynne Jones building will include a new ground floor and six upper storey, providing 9,700 sq ft of space.

Completion is due in autumn next year.

Lockheed Martin and the UK Space Agency are partners in the project, which aims to be a ‘world-class R&D, educational and incubator facility for the regional, national, and international space sector’.
