South Tyneside set to approve Karbon scheme
The affordable homebuilder’s 124-apartment adult extra care development on the site of the former Benton Road School is recommended for approval next week.
Designed by JDDK Architect and supported by Pegasus, facilities would include a café, kitchen, community space, and hair salon, as well as landscaping and parking.
Located on the corner of Galsworthy Road and Benton Road, the brownfield site has been unused since the school closed, with the building recently demolished.
Two enclosed internal courtyards are included in the designs, one for dementia sufferers and the other for the remaining residents, as well as external gardens, activity space, and terraces with seating next to the café.
The extra care provisions will include 25 ground-floor purpose-built dementia apartments, and on-site care will be given to all residents by a ‘help to live at home’ provider appointed by the council.
The rest of the apartments will be made up of 32 one-bed and 92 two-bed flats, and 100% will be affordable.
Karbon Homes is a registered provider for South Tyneside Council, and the development will form part of the council’s wider adult social care accommodation strategy, aimed at supporting people to continue to live independently within a community.
Potential residents will be assessed and will have to meet a minimum level of care requirement, as set out by the council.
