Sunderland glass centre debate rumbles on

The planned closure of the National Glass Centre next year has once again come under scrutiny, following a motion passed by the council that will see Sunderland University questioned over its estimated repair costs and finances.

The National Glass Centre is closing due to the cost of repair, with Sunderland University citing estimates of between £14-45m.

Patrick Melia, chief executive of Sunderland Council, will write asking for more information about the accuracy of the repair costs, and about the site’s ownership and finances.

In an effort to preserve the city’s glassmaking heritage, the government is funding a £5m facility dedicated to the craft in Borough Road, Sunniside to be operated by Sunderland Culture.

However, the motion raised at the council’s meeting last week said the new venue fails to address the loss of expertise caused by the closure of the NGC, and said it was only ‘partially costed’.

Calls have now been made by Save the National Glass Centre campaigners to have the original building placed into public ownership.

Appalling decision. Should never be allowed to happen. It was for the public and is the home of glass making in the UK. Incredible education with an outstanding teaching of at risk glass making skills. The University could repair it but choose not to. I wonder why ????
