Unanimous nod for Aldi in Newcastle

The supermarket group will close at Stamfordham Road in Westerhope, to be replaced by Pure Gym, and will open a larger store at the former Go Outdoors on West Denton Retail Park.

Newcastle City Council’s planning committee gave the scheme its approval in line with officer recommendation.

The empty unit will be refurbished to provide a new Aldi food store with a sales area of 15,887 sq ft, a significant upgrade on the existing unit’s 9,149 sq ft. The new location will have 111 parking spaces.

All staff at the Westerhope store will transfer over to the new store and up to 15 full-time equivalent jobs will be created. The Westerhope store will remain open for business until the new store is ready to start trading.

A new pedestrian crossing will be installed on West Denton Way to allow safe pedestrian access to the store.

A spokesperson for Aldi, said: “We’re delighted members approved our plans for the relocation of our outdated store. We have worked closely with officers and amended our plans in light of comments received from Newcastle City Council to develop a scheme that is fit for purpose.

“We look forward developing our new store in the near future.”
