Wetherspoon reopens Mile Castle, closes on hotel launch

A £5m investment programme is set to complete, with the city centre pub refurbished, and an adjoining hotel block due to open in November.

JD Wetherspoon bought Gibb Chambers, at 52 Westgate Road, in 2019, and was granted permission to turn the offices into the chain’s first hotel in the North East.

After delays caused by the COVID pandemic, the project was consented in July 2022 with the planning reference 2019/1603/01/DET.

Once complete the hotel will feature 26 en-suite rooms, as well as a 3,000 sq ft beer garden on a former car park behind the pub.

LBF Architects created the plans for both the pub and the hotel, with Spectrum Acoustic Consultants carrying out the noise report.

The pub, originally opened by JDW in 2009, has now reopened following a 13-week closure, with alterations throughout the three-storey building including the relocation of the toilets on the ground floor, a new passage between customer areas, and an extension to the third floor bar area.

The hotel is due to open on 12 November.
