Yarm High Street refurb paused

Funded by £20m of Levelling Up money and due to start on Monday, the nine-month scheme has been halted after objections.

The work was to focus on creating improved public realm, paving, and seating areas around the Stockton-on-Tees town, including new cycle parking and interactive play items for children will also feature.

Cllr Richard Eglington, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Following the petition that was launched last week I have asked officers to do what is needed to pause the proposed scheme to give people another chance to have their say…

“We want to ensure we get the best outcome for the residents and businesses of Yarm.”

The council’s own in-house team was due to carry out the works, which will focus on the town’s northern gateway by Yarm bridge, Silver Street crossing, Yarm Town Hall crossing point, the central area of the town, and the southern gateway by Yarm School.

Improvements will also include references to points of historical interest, complementing recent restoration works to Yarm Town Hall, which transformed the grade two-listed building into a heritage centre.

As part of the scheme, footpath improvements along the River Tees were completed in September and upgrades to Snaith’s Field playground are nearing completion.

Cllr Richard Eglington, cabinet member for regeneration and sousing at Stockton-on-Tees Council, said: “Yarm is a popular town and these improvements will help to enhance the attractiveness and accessibility of the High Street and create a pleasant environment for people to sit, enjoy and spend more time in the area.

“I want to assure residents and businesses that we will be reaching out to them to explain how each phase of work will progress. We want to keep them informed every step of the way.”
