The North East Combined Authority has committed £2.5m to a new Rail Development Fund aimed at accelerating a pipeline of schemes across the region.
Among the priorities is further development of the Northumberland Line, which reopened in December 2024 and has already recorded more than one million journeys.
Plans are now being progressed to extend the route to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, with a potential planning submission targeted by 2028.
Proposals are also being explored for an additional station serving Wansbeck General Hospital.
The fund will also support wider rail ambitions, including early-stage work linked to the reopening of the Leamside Line, being carried out by AECOM, and the return of passenger services at Ferryhill Station.
Since reopening, the Northumberland Line has seen strong demand, with services currently operating between Newcastle and Ashington via a series of new stations.
A further stop at Bedlington is due to open shortly, adding to the route’s capacity and reach.
Despite the line’s early success, capacity pressures remain.
Operator Northern Rail is currently unable to lengthen trains due to fleet constraints, although discussions are ongoing with partners to address the issue within existing budgets.
