Castle confirmed on NESST team
The South Tyneside-based firm will supply mechanical, electrical, public health, and renewable services for Northumbria University’s North East Space Skills Technology Centre.
Castle is working alongside main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine and client Northumbria University.
Located in the centre of the university’s Newcastle campus, the centre will aim to put the UK at the forefront of research and innovation in areas including optical satellite communications, space weather, and space-based energy.
The former Wynne Jones building is being transformed to accommodate the centre, which is expected to open in autumn 2026, with work including a new ground floor and six upper storeys providing 9,700 sq ft of space..
Designed by Ryder Architecture, the 59,000 sq ft NESST building will provide satellite manufacturing clean rooms, advanced prototyping laboratories, a Mission Operations Centre, teaching laboratories, and collaborative spaces for work with companies in the space manufacturing supply chain.
The comprehensive scope of works for Castle includes the design, supply, install and commissioning of mechanical systems consisting of above ground drainage, domestic services, low temperature and hot water heating.
There is large scale underfloor heating, ventilation and air conditioning, incoming mains, thermal insulation, commissioning and building management systems to monitor and control energy use and sprinklers.
Also, the installation of a 17.86kWp photovoltaic system, covering a total roof area of circa 1,000 sq ft and air source heat pumps.
Electrical works include, LV installations, small power, fire and intruder alarms, security systems, lighting, including controls, earthing and bonding, lightning protection, data, induction loops and EV charging.
