Robertson completes Durham Uni refurbishment
The two-year project saw the 1950s-era Department of Chemistry building get a much-needed refresh with the installation of modern laboratories, energy efficient lighting, improved workspaces, and more – all while students continued to use the facility.
Robertson Construction North East had to embrace a few challenges to enable Durham University’s chemistry building to remain operational while undergoing a substantial, multi-million-pound renovation.
The main contractor utilised sealed hoardings to segregate a section of the building for use, preventing debris and dust from contaminating the ‘in-use’ parts of the building. Demolition work was also conducted outside of core opening hours to minimise any disruption.
A 3D digital model from 360 Group helped Robertson, and project manager Gardiner & Theobald, to plot out the refurbishment in detail without having to be on site. The model was made using laser scanning and had a 15mm tolerance, meaning it was very precise.
“This was a prime opportunity to showcase our expertise in working within live environments,” said Robertson regional managing director for the North East Neil Kennedy.
Kennedy added that Robertson’s experience at Durham University – the contractor led the £8.4m restoration of the Confluence Building in 2022 and the £4.7m refurbishment of Trevelyan College in 2025 – helped make this renovation project seamless.
“Drawing on our experience of working on campus, we understood how best to deliver this project partnering closely with the university to ensure these spaces met the needs of its users,” he said
“Consistent engagement with staff and students throughout helped create high-quality, flexible spaces tailored to the department’s teaching and operational requirements. We will continue to work closely with Durham University to further assist in optimising its estate.”
In addition to G&T, 360 Group, and Robertson, the project team included Space Architects and TGA Consulting Engineers.
Elsewhere in the North East, Robertson is delivering two extra care apartment projects in South Shields for Karbon Homes and South Tyneside Council: 124 flats at the former Chuter Ede School on Benton Road and 95 homes in Hebburn.
