LIVE | North East local election results

In what has been dubbed ‘Mega May’, elections took place yesterday across 136 local authorities in England, as well as the whole of Scotland and Wales. Place North East will keep you up to date with the outcomes for Hartlepool, Sunderland, South Tyneside, Gateshead, Newcastle, and North Tyneside.

Newcastle

Summary: All 78 seats were contested on Thursday’s election. Previously a Labour majority, now no party has overall control of the council, with the Greens and Reform making similar gains in the city. Former Leader Karen Kilgour was ousted from her seat in the Blakelaw and Cowgate ward, where Reform UK secured victory.

Lib dems: Won 25 seats, gaining 2.

Greens: Won 24 seats, up from 2.

Reform: Won 24, up from 0.

Independents: Won 3, losing 3.

Labour: Won 2, losing 44.

Conservative: Won 0, losing 1.

Gateshead

Summary: Mirroring Sunderland, Reform has had what can only be described as a historical victory in Gateshead, wrestling control from Labour for the first time in 52 years. Labour casualties included former Leader Martin Gannon, who worked as a Gateshead councillor since 1984 and led the council for 10 years.

Reform: Won 38, up from 0.

Lib Dems: Won 13, losing 5 seats.

Labour: Won 12, losing 36.

Green: Won 3, up from 0.

South Tyneside

Summary: Labour has lost control of South Tyneside Council for the first time since 1979, with Reform making sweeping gains to come out on top. Due to boundary changes, all 54 seats were up for election.

Reform: Won 41, up from 0 seats.

Green: Won 10, losing 1 seat.

Independents: Won 2, losing 13.

Labour: Won 1, losing 27 seats.

Sunderland

Summary: Reform has made history in Sunderland, with a sweeping victory that has seen it gain a majority and end Labour’s 52-year hold on the area. All of Sunderland’s 75 seats were up for election, and from a starting point of 0, the party now has 58 seats while Labour has lost 49 and is reduced to 5 councillors in total.

Reform: Won 58 seats, from 0.

Lib Dems: Maintained its 12 seats.

Labour: Won 5 seats, and lost 49.

Conservative: Lost all their seats, and is down to 0 councillors from a previous 9.

North Tyneside

Summary: Labour has held its majority, albeit losing 12 seats, as both Green and Reform gain seats from a starting point of 0 in the traditionally Labour heartland. 20 out of 60 seats were up for contest in the election.

Labour: Won 5 and lost 12 seats.

Reform: Won 10 seats, their first in this constituency.

Conservative: No change for Conservative, as the party kept two seats.

Green: Won 2 seats, from a starting point of 0.

Independents: Won 1 seat.

Hartlepool

Summary: 12 seats out of a total of 36 were up for grabs in Hartlepool, and Reform won all of them. Labour lost 7 seats and with them the council majority, while the conservatives lost 4 and the independents lost 1. Reform and Labour now have equal standing in terms of the overall 36-seat council.

Reform: Won 12 out of 12 and now has 15 seats overall on the council.

Labour: Won 0 and lost 7, and now also has 15 seats on the council.

Independents and others: Won 0, losing 1 seat, with a remaining total of 6 seats on the council.

Conservative: Won 0 seats, losing 4 – the Conservatives now have no councillors at all in Hartlepool.
