North Tyneside set to approve 270 Backworth homes
Northumberland Estates’ plans for 56 acres in the village are recommended for a green light at the council’s meeting on Wednesday evening.
The scheme has been designed by architect Pod and consultancy Lichfields.
The site is on land to the north of the A19 and south of Backworth lane. It is also bound by West Lane to the east and agricultural land to the west, and is close to the Killingworth Moor site, which is allocated for residential development of up to 2,000 homes.
Perhaps more pertinently, the site is designated as safeguarded land in the North Tyneside Local Plan and is home to the Scheduled Monument of West Backworth Medieval Village, which occupies 16 acres of the north‑eastern field, within the red line boundary.
The medieval village is the best-preserved medieval settlement in Tyne and Wear and was most likely abandoned by the 16th century.
In terms of facilities, the site has footpaths into Backworth, and Castle Square lies to the east, which has a large play area.
