Approval for Lovell’s £11m Tynemet College resi plans

The site on Queen Alexandra Road West in North Shields, which has been vacant since the facility closed in 2023, will be redeveloped into 47 homes.

Work is expected to start next year and will include the demolition of the college to make was for a mix of three- to four-bedroom houses.

Supported by Hedley Planning, the scheme was unanimously approved by North Tyneside Council’s planning committee. The project team also includes Edward Architects and ONE Landscapes.

Plans include a new access road and urban landscaping on the site, which was previously part of Queen Alexandra College, although a grade two-listed redbrick building on the site is not covered by the planning permission.

Landscaping will include the planting of more street trees, and economic benefits generated by the scheme will include an estimated £95,000 in council tax revenue, as well as 160 indirect jobs along the supply chain.

Alex Franklin, associate director at Hedley Planning, said: “This is another big boost for local housing on Tyneside and brings an important site back into use, providing people with quality homes in places where they want to live.

“As planners, we are always keen to see urban regeneration of brownfield sites and the re-purposing of existing locations to deliver a strong legacy.”
