Balfour Beatty bags £833m Teesside job

The infrastructure firm will construct Net Zero Teesside Power for Technip Energies, set to be the world’s first gas-fired onshore power station with carbon capture, compression, and storage.

Working alongside Technip and GE Venova, and with technology partner Shell Catalysts & Technologies, Balfour will deliver the project using its civil engineering, ground engineering, power transmission, and distribution divisions.

Construction is expected to start later this year and complete in 2028.

The post-combustion carbon capture system that Balfour is to build will be capable of capturing up to 2m tonnes of CO2 per year.

This will be compressed and fed into the offshore pipeline, to be stored under the North Sea by the Northern Endurance Parnership, a JV between BP, Equinor, and Total Energies.

Net Zero Teesside Power is a joint venture between BP and Equinor.

Once up and running, the new power station will produce around 742MW of low-carbon power, equivalent to powering more than 1m UK homes for a year.

This contract follows the government’s October 2024 pledge of £21.7bn towards carbon capture projects from energy, industry, and hydrogen production.

Net Zero Teesside Power and the Northern Endurance Partnership subsequently received Final Investment Decision in December 2024.

Leo Quinn, Balfour Beatty Group chief executive, said: “Net Zero Teesside Power is an ambitious scheme, forging the path towards the sustainable infrastructure of the future and positioning the UK as a leader in cleaner, greener energy consumption.

“The scheme will not only be a critical driver in achieving net zero but will also play a key role in boosting regional economic growth in the North East of England, generating thousands of employment opportunities both in the immediate term and in the future.”
