Delayed £28m Maltings venue progresses in Berwick

Almost four years on from announcing the project, Northumberland Council has released an image showing the future design of the theatre ahead of a planning application being submitted.

The £28.3m project for the Eastern Lane venue is the latest in a number of investments in the town over recent years, such as a £23m leisure centre and a £10m cultural hub project at Berwick Barracks.

With the existing Maltings venue declared no longer fit for purpose, a RIBA design competition was announced in December 2021.

In March 2023, MICA Architects won the job with a brief including an auditorium, two separate cinema spaces, a studio theatre, flexible spaces, a restaurant, and a bar.

Council leader Glen Sanderson said: “It was very positive to see the high level of support for The Maltings proposals which will transform the cultural offering in the town.

“The new image looks stunning and I would encourage everyone to have a look at the plans when they go onto the County Council’s website in the near future.”
