Grainger Market £9m revamp progresses
Robertson Construction has completed the demolition of the central arcade, structural works, and improvements to the air raid shelter, as the city centre restoration scheme marches on.
Plans as approved include the installation of two pavilions, at Nun Street and Nelson Street; reflooring, lighting of alleyways; the installation of glazed sliding doors to all 14 entrances; digital displays; M&E work and work on toilets, signage and restoring original mosaic flooring.
Steel frames for the Nelson Street Pavilion and the 14 entrances are now in place, which will allow sliding doors to be installed throughout the market.
A substantial tiling programme is also now underway, with the floors being laid with ceramic tiles, including bespoke ones for the exits that will show people which street they are entering.
Once Nelson Street pavilion and the toilets are finished, work will move to the Nun Street end of the arcade and once again, the focus will be on a new pavilion, toilets, and flooring.
Work is being carried out in phases, and original features are being preserved and re-used whenever possible.
Listed building consent was given in June last year for the redevelopment of the covered market, with designs from FaulknerBrowns Architects, securing £8.2m support from the Conservative government’s Levelling Up Fund.
Cllr Dan Greenhough, cabinet member for economy, jobs and skills at Newcastle City Council, said: “The multi-million-pound project to restore Newcastle’s iconic Grainger Market is advancing well, with significant progress made in the programme that will protect and enhance this must-loved building.
“This is a very exciting time for the market as we continue with the improvement works which will deliver long-term benefits for all involved. We would like to thank traders and customers for their patience and understanding.
“We are sure everyone who is part of the market and shops here has their eye on the long-term goal and is very excited to see the finished result.”
