Grainger Market revamp completes

Robertson has finished the £9m refurbishment of Newcastle’s city centre indoor arcade, with the 190-year old building fully open for business.

Designed by FaulknerBrowns, work has included the installation of two new pavilions, entrances, new flooring, toilets, seats, signage and doors.

The redesign of the arcade has also increased the available open space, which it is hoped will be used for cultural events.

Backed by £8.2m from the Levelling Up fund, Newcastle City Council also gave £800,000 to the project.

Listed building consent was given in June 2024 and the market was originally due to fully reopen last year.

Delays occurred due to unexpected complications that arose during work on the grade one-listed building.

Newcastle City Council leader Karen Kilgour said: “Newcastle is the best city in the world and we have the best market in the world.

“It was voted Britain’s favourite market in 2020 and that was before we have made all of these amazing upgrades.

“I see no reason why it cannot be a huge attraction to the city.”
