Lovell acquires land for Morpeth development

The housebuilder has purchased two separate parcels of land previously occupied by Northgate Hospital and plans to start construction work on 141 homes shortly.

Permission for the Northumberland development was granted in November last year, and Lovell has since acquired the 17 acres, with the northern parcel set to comprise 53 four- and five-bedroom homes, and a southern site set to provide 88 properties including 25 affordable.

The 25 affordable homes will range from one-bedroom apartments to four-bedroom properties, while the homes for private sale will feature a mix of three, four, and five-bedroom houses.

This is the second housing development on former hospital land in Morpeth, as Barratt has recently started on its 260-home estate on land formerly owned by St George’s Hospital.

As well as the housing, a hospital water tower will be preserved on site and plans include a number of cycleways, footpaths, open space, and a play area.

The water tower will be kept as a feature in an area of open space on the northern site, with the developer allocating £50,000 towards its renovation.

Phil Jones, head of land and partnerships for the North East region of Lovell, said: “This acquisition allows us to move to the next stage in our plans with work on the site to commence shortly.

“This development will provide a high-quality and well-planned neighbourhood with a range of house styles and tenures.

“Our plans will regenerate and transform what currently stands as a brownfield site into an attractive and sustainable place to live.

“These areas of land were surplus to requirements for the NHS and now our land purchase will generate funds to benefit Northgate Hospital.”
