North East brownfield fund passes 4,000-home milestone
Funding has been confirmed for the programme’s final three sites in Northumberland, Gateshead, and North Tyneside, led by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority.
The latest allocations amount to a combined £566,750 for 38 homes, all for social rent:
- Netherton Lane, Northumberland: £250,000 towards 13 homes on a long-vacant site.
- Derwentwater Court, Gateshead: £170,000 towards 10 homes on a former bedsits site.
- Marden Residents Association, North Tyneside: £131,750 towards 15 homes, replacing a vacant and deteriorating building.
The three schemes form the final sites to be supported through the fund, which provides upfront investment to bring forward brownfield sites where development would otherwise be unviable.
More than 620 homes supported by the programme have already been completed, including schemes at Newbiggin Hall, Commissioners Quay, and Lyndon Walk in Blyth, and The Esplanade in Whitley Bay.
Further sites in Walker, Gateshead, New Hartley, and Farringdon Row in Sunderland are currently under construction following investment from the fund.
The latest allocations mean the programme has now unlocked more than 4,000 homes across all seven North East local authority areas.
All 38 homes across the final three schemes will be for social rent, with the developments also intended to provide modern, energy-efficient housing.
