Placefirst gets ball rolling on Farringdon Row

Chosen as Sunderland City Council’s preferred developer in 2023, the firm has launched a consultation for a 165-home build-to-rent neighbourhood within the Riverside Sunderland masterplan.

Placefirst is working with local architect IDP and Sunderland-headquartered Identity Consult on the project.

The Riverside Sunderland masterplan as a whole aims to deliver 1,000 homes, with Farringdon Row, set to include one- and two-bedroom apartments and two to four-bedroom homes for long-term rent, featuring a mix of private and communal gardens.

As the second residential neighbourhood within the masterplan, Farringdon Row is intended to be a flagship development, with views of the River Wear and Riverside Park.

Alun Davies, head of planning at Placefirst, said: “At Placefirst, we ensure that our developments are people-focused – with every decision made with the specific needs and desires of local communities in mind.”

Peter McIntyre, executive director of city development at Sunderland City Council added: “Riverside Sunderland is a transforming and high-quality accommodation is at the heart of our plan to create a stunning new city centre destination – a world-class place to live, work and play.

“Placefirst have a track record of delivery and we’re pleased to see them moving forward with their plans for Farringdon Row, seeking to engage with the local community as they shape them.”

The online element of the consultation will be live until 8pm on 15 July and can be accessed here.

The first main neighbourhood at Riverside will be Vaux, while plans are now also advancing at Nile + Villiers, where council-owned Siglion is working with development manager Town.
