Castle Leazes demolition begins
Unite Students and Newcastle University are in the process of demolishing the former university hall of residence, ahead of its £250m redevelopment of the site.
Demolition of the 1,247-bed building was approved in July last year and is expected to finish by spring.
The original building was deemed as being too costly to bring up to modern standards.
Plans submitted for the replacement student accommodation have increased the capacity to 2,000 beds, spread over five blocks.
The project team for the new student accommodation includes Pegasus Group on planning and architect Norr in charge of design.
Although yet to be approved, plans are due to go before the council early this year.
The university has said the development would alleviate pressure on the city’s housing market, freeing up space for locals in places such as Jesmond.
