Contractors shortlisted for New Hospital Programme

The government has selected the final 16 firms that will compete for work on the £37bn framework to deliver the schemes across England between 2025-2040, which in the North East includes Shotley Bridge Community Hospital and Northumberland’s CEDAR upgrades.

The so-called ‘alliance partners’ will be responsible for designing, constructing, and the handover of individual hospital projects, with the talks with the 16 firms expected to conclude in autumn and final appointments made by the end of the year.

In the North East, the delayed Shotley Bridge Community Hospital in County Durham, will now start construction between 2026-27 as part of the ‘wave 1’ projects, with a budget of £500m.

Elsewhere in the North East, Northumberland’s £72m CEDAR programme upgrades are already underway and will continue to be carried out as part of the Wave 0 schemes already under construction.

Sir Robert McAlpine is the contractor on the project.
