Dramatic makeover for Tyne Theatre and Opera House
A feasibility study has been carried out and listed building consent has now been lodged for the refurbishment of the Pit Bar and Grand Saloon Cellars in Newcastle’s historic building.
A grant was provided by the council last year to assess whether the proposed work would be viable.
As part of wider renovations to the building, the bar would undergo work including the removal of a wall that was installed in the 1980s, reinstating a staircase, and installing toilets.
Designed in 1867, the bar originally closed because it lacked a fire escape.
The Grand Saloon Cellars, meanwhile is in the basement of the building and is part of an 1892 extension to the theatre which was designed by architect firm Oliver & Leeson.
Plans are for new toilet facilities, as well as improvements to the floor levels.
A grant application for funding from the National Lottery will be submitted this month, so that if the LBC is approved, work can start on refurbishing the theatre.
