Esh completes A1290 dualling works at IAMP

The construction firm has completed the roadworks in Sunderland, delivering a major upgrade to a key transport route serving the International Advanced Manufacturing Park.

Delivered in partnership with IAMP LLP, established by Sunderland City Council and South Tyneside Council, the scheme involved dualling 1,550 metres of the A1290, largely delivered off-line, alongside junction upgrades and new pedestrian and cycle infrastructure.

The project forms part of a wider programme of infrastructure investment designed to unlock development at the 370-acre IAMP, a nationally significant advanced manufacturing and automotive employment site that includes Nissan and its supply chain.

The completed works are expected to reduce congestion, improve journey times, and support long-term economic growth across Sunderland and South Tyneside, with the site anticipated to create more than 7,000 jobs over the next decade.

Associated works included drainage infrastructure such as swales and attenuation ponds, street lighting, traffic signals, pedestrian crossings and landscaping.

Environmental measures were incorporated to manage surface water and protect local habitats, with stakeholder engagement maintained throughout construction to minimise disruption.

Steven Garrigan, divisional director at Esh Construction, said: “Delivering the A1290 Dualling Works has been a vital part of improving the region’s strategic road network and supporting future growth at the International Advanced Manufacturing Park.”

Cllr Kevin Johnston, portfolio holder for housing, regeneration and business at Sunderland City Council, said: “Since the first building opened its doors in 2019, we’ve seen global firms such as Falco, SNOP, Jatco, and AESC all make IAMP their home and the completion of these works will pave the way for further development as we seek to establish it as one of the UK’s most advanced manufacturing hubs.”

Cllr Margaret Meling, lead member for economic growth and transport at South Tyneside Council, added: “This investment in infrastructure will not only improve connectivity and reduce congestion but also create the conditions to secure new private sector investment and accelerate job creation.”
