Esh reaches steel frame milestone at Eston Precinct

The construction firm is working alongside Redcar and Cleveland Council to deliver 14,600 sq ft of retail space split among seven units in the Tees Valley town.

The steel frame installation is now complete, with completion expected in autumn.

The development is being funded by the UK government and Tees Valley Combined Authority, and Esh is working with Identity Consult, SPACE Architects, Portland Consulting Engineers, and Fairhurst to deliver the project.

Esh Construction was appointed to deliver the project by the council in June 2025, following which the existing precinct was demolished.

This latest phase of work began in January, with all foundations now installed, including reinforced concrete with holding down bolts.

Steel frames, weighing a total of 85 tonnes, were lifted into position using a 100-tonne crane, securing them into position to form the emerging structural frame.

Once in place, the steel was lined and levelled ahead of grouting, while column encasements were used to provide essential protection and stability for the completed framework.

In the coming weeks, roofing works will commence on site using a Bauder roofing system, alongside the installation of new foul and surface water mains drainage connections on the adjacent road.

Landscaping plans include new paving, trees, benches, and upgraded lighting and power infrastructure.

Grant Watson, construction director at Esh Construction, said: “This milestone reflects the hard work and strong partnership of everyone involved, and it’s exciting to see the structure now taking shape.

“With the frame now in place, we can confidently progress onto the next stages of construction and continue delivering a scheme that will bring lasting benefits to the local community and much needed retail space for the town.”

Cllr Lynn Pallister, cabinet member for growth and enterprise, said: “This milestone shows real momentum in the transformation of Eston Precinct and reflects our commitment to investing in the future of our town centres.

“Once complete, the development will provide seven new retail units and a high-quality outdoor space that will encourage more people to visit and support local businesses.

“Alongside better paving, lighting and spaces for events and markets, this scheme will create a more vibrant and welcoming place for residents and visitors alike, while supporting economic growth and job opportunities in the local area.

“We’re grateful to our partners and funders for their continued support as the project moves into its next phase.”
