Newcastle joins padel craze

The City Council has granted temporary permission for three outdoor courts in the Stephenson Quarter area, on an unused plot of land between igloo Regeneration’s Pattern Shop and the North East Futures University Technical College.

It said the courts are not considered suitable as a permanent option for the site, but would in the short-term provide public benefits, including improved leisure facilities in the city centre, with all the health and wellbeing that brings with it.

The council also noted that the development would complement the surrounding properties, such as the offices at the Pattern Shop and the planned development of Plot 1 next to it, which is also destined to be office space.

An opening date hasn’t been set, but permission for the use has been granted until May 2028.

Facilities will be split across two levels and will include a reception, changing room, toilets, and the three floodlit courts.

Newcastle will be the latest North East location to embrace the Mexican sport, which has swept the nation, joining Benton, Sunderland, Durham, and Hexham.
