Sunderland approves 300-home scheme

Gentoo will deliver the low-carbon, affordable homes on brownfield land in Pennywell.

Chester Gate will comprise a mix of houses, bungalows, and apartments and all of the 294 homes will all be available for either rent or shared ownership.

Large areas of landscaped space and footpaths are a big focus of the development and each home will feature solar panels, electric vehicle charging points and air source heat pumps.

Gentoo is planning to deliver more than 700 homes across Sunderland by 2029, with work on this scheme expected to start in July.

Joanne Gordon, homes and development director at Gentoo Group, said: “This development marks a significant milestone in Gentoo’s Affordable Development Programme, creating an affordable home for more than 1500 residents in the city.

“I am confident this development will transform the local area, both socially and economically.

“We will work closely with our partners to support the local area throughout the development to ensure we are creating a space with both new and existing residents in mind.”
