Durham Academy set for revamp
Carried out on behalf of the Department for Education, Sunderland City Council is ready to give the green light to plans to demolish and construct buildings on the school’s campus, with Willmott Dixon overseeing the project.
The construction firm will manage the demolition of two of the school’s five buildings, the construction of a new main teaching block, associated landscaping, and the partial refurbishment of the remaining original buildings.
Space Architects has designed the scheme, and the wider project team includes landscape architect Oobe, planning consultant DPP, civil engineer BGP, and Apex Acoustics.
The secondary school is located on Bracken Court in Ushaw Moor, County Durham, around 3.5 miles west of the city centre.
The new three-storey building will have space for 500 students.
The buildings to be demolished are a 19,000 sq ft two-storey teaching block on the west of the campus, which has ben closed since July 2022 over safety concerns, including asbestos, and the 40,000 sq ft main teaching block located in the centre of the site, which ranges from one- to three-storeys.
