Ellingham Hall looks to escape the every day

The venue in Northumberland has submitted plans for a spa, as well as five ground-floor garden bedrooms and five houses, in designs by Ninette Edwards.

The village of Ellingham has been home to a version of the building since the 17th century.

The hall was rebuilt in 1897 and subsequently enlarged, with various fires over the years leading to parts being redeveloped.

Throughout its life, it has been used as a private family home, a farm for the Women’s Land Army during the Second World War, a prep school for boys, and now as a venue for weddings, parties, and corporate events.

The venue considers its target market to be visitors that stay overnight for events such as weddings, and believes that a spa would make this more appealing to customers.

The venue received planning consent in 2021 for a new West Wing on the former servants’ quarters, and the reinstatement of the East Wing.

It would now like to add the spa, five ground-floor bedrooms, and five houses dotted around the estate.

Two of the houses would be sunken into the landscaped walled garden, and three would be within the walled garden, an area hidden from the main hall.

The houses would range from one- to four-bedrooms.
