Eight flights of stairs clinging to the side of the cliff will be replaced in an unusual and vital project for visitors to the South Tyneside coast to be able to enjoy the seaside again after the steps were closed a year ago due to safety concerns.
South Tyneside Council has appointed Esh Construction to deliver the £600,000 scheme which begins this month.

The current staircase, leading to the popular Marsden Grotto gastro pub, comprises eight separate flights descending the cliff face from The Leas down to Marsden Bay. Two upper sections of the staircase will be formed from concrete, while the lower six sections will be replaced with a steel staircase system, removing the existing timber elements and incorporating new landings, handrails and edge protection measures to futureproof the popular route down to the bay.
The steel structure will be finished with a protective coating to provide long-term resistance against saltwater, wind and harsh coastal weather conditions, ensuring it is well equipped to withstand the demands of the environment for years to come.
Rod Milne, contract manager at Esh Construction, said: “This is a unique and exciting project which requires a different way of thinking to a traditional staircase replacement. The location presents a number of considerations, from restricted access and working at height to the unpredictable coastal conditions, so careful planning and collaboration between all parties is essential.
“We’ve worked closely with South Tyneside Council and our specialist delivery partners to develop the safest and most effective construction approach for the site. That collaborative planning will play a key role in ensuring the scheme is delivered safely and efficiently.
“Once complete, the new structure will provide a durable long-term solution, restoring an important route at Marsden Bay and allowing residents and visitors to continue enjoying this iconic stretch of coastline for years to come.”
The existing staircase will be carefully dismantled, with elements removed by hand before replacement steps are lifted into place. A mobile crane will operate from Marsden Grotto car park at key stages of the programme, enabling the safe transportation and installation of materials in the difficult-to-access environment.
Karen Pittuck, lead member at South Tyneside Council, said: “We know how important these steps are, both as an access route at Marsden Bay and to the operation of the Marsden Grotto.
“I’m pleased that we are now in a position to move ahead with their full replacement.
“This is a challenging coastal location and it has been important that we took the time needed to properly assess the condition of the steps and develop a safe and lasting solution.
“The new structure has been designed to withstand the harsh coastal conditions while helping to minimise the need for ongoing repairs and maintenance.”
The project is expected to be completed in early 2027, restoring public access between the clifftop and beach while supporting the long-term operation of one of South Tyneside’s most recognisable coastal landmarks.
