Go Outdoors stakes out 20,000 sq ft at Metrocentre

Owned by the JD Sports group, the outdoor clothing and camping retailer is in expansion mode, and will take up the former Wilko unit at the Gateshead destination.

A debut for the group at the Metrocentre, this will also be Go Outdoors’ only sore in the region in a shopping centre environment. The unit in Blue Mall is 20,242 sq ft.

The move follows the announcement in January that Go Outdoors is to take over the former John Lewis shop at York’s Vangarde shopping centre.

Presenting as a Go Outdoors Express, the Metrocentre store will stock a full range of brands such as Rab, OEX, and Berghaus, as well as the likes of Peter Storm, HiGear, and Brasher.

Part of the offer will be services such as boot and rucksack fitting, with a focus on omni-channel retail designed to meet the needs of Metrocentre’s customer base.

Wilko closed its Metrocentre store late in 2023.

Ben Cox, director at landlord Sovereign Centros, said: “The signing of Go Outdoors is both a direct response to what our visitors want from the destination, and a great example of the importance of Metrocentre to the North East.

“Late last year we were hit with a significant challenge as Wilko closed, but a proactive approach and the destination’s appeal has put us in a position to introduce a brand that belongs here, in good time. Go Outdoors joins us as we build momentum with major retailers, like Frasers Group, Zara, and Primark, all committing to and investing in Metrocentre.”

Go Outdoors chief executive Lee Bagnal added: “We are excited to be opening a new location at Metrocentre and to offer customers the best range of outdoor clothing, footwear and equipment. Everyone can reap the rewards of being in nature from improved well-being and physical health and we are happy to facilitate that.”

Other news at Metrocentre recently has included Primark committing to a major upsize, and EE opening a new “experiential” store.
