Newcastle regeneration schemes to receive £2.4m boost
Founders Place and Church Walk have been selected to benefit from the Brownfield Land Release Fund, with housing at the forefront of the agenda.
Within the wider Stephenson Quarter, the 10-acre Founders Place site is located behind Newcastle’s Central Station and has been the focus of development efforts for the last decade.
Projects so far include the Crowne Plaza Hotel, the Boiler Shop event space, and the Pattern Shop workspace, with plans for grade A office space and housing still in the pipeline.
A joint venture between igloo and Newcastle City Council, Founders Place contains a number of grade two-listed industrial heritage sites, including the former offices of Robert & George Stephenson.
The funding will allow the developers to make safe a number of those buildings, including the removal of asbestos and unsafe structures, and putting in new retaining structures.
Church Walk in Walker will also address housing issues, with the Hexham House tower block set to be demolished as part of the redevelopment of the area.
Paula Maines, cabinet member for a living city at the city council said: “We are delighted to have secured some of the Brownfield Land Release Fund to help enable us build new homes that best meet the needs of our residents.
“We’ll be consulting with residents on our plans for Church Walk and we hope they are as excited as we are about the proposals and the transformation of the area.”
