More green energy set for North East
The Morven Wind Farm would link offshore wind turbines, situated around 60km off the Aberdeenshire coast, with the national grid at Hawthorn Pit substation near Seaham.
Key components of the project in the North East include underground onshore electricity cables near Seaham and a new substation at Hawthorn Pit, part of the Morven Hawthorn Pit Grid Connection Project.
These elements are expected to bring investment, infrastructure upgrades, and potential local job opportunities to the region.
The latest round of public consultation on the Morven Offshore Wind Farm’s transmission infrastructure is set to close on 30 November 2025, giving local communities in the North East a final opportunity to provide feedback on the project’s proposals.
Developed by Morven Offshore Wind Limited, a joint venture between EnBW and JERA Nex bp Limited, the wind farm could generate enough electricity to power around 3m UK homes, supporting the North East’s transition to renewable energy and strengthening the region’s role in the UK’s green economy.
Thomas Hudson, project director at JERA Nex bp said: “We have enjoyed meeting residents and stakeholders and hearing their views and insights.
“We are especially grateful to the Seaham High School students and local Scouts groups for ensuring that we have considered the views of young people in our project.”
Kate Potter, deputy project director at EnBW said: “We recognise the importance of working closely with local communities as we develop the Morven Hawthorn Pit Grid Connection Project.
“The feedback we receive will help us continue to refine our proposals and we encourage anyone who has yet to share their views to get involved and have their say.”
