GMI starts work on 280,000 sq ft Cummins shed

Marking the first phase of Ingenium Parc, global power systems giant Cummins is expanding its presence in Darlington with a distribution centre next to its existing manufacturing and office campus.

Cummins has operated in Darlington since 1965 and employs 1,700 people locally, as well as supporting a wider supply chain. GMI Construction has broken ground in Salters Lane on the 282,000 sq ft building on a 13-acre plot.

Steve Morley, Cummins’ plant manager, said: “By bringing more of our logistics operations onto site, we can further improve efficiency, strengthen collaboration across the campus and support the future growth of our operations.”

In Darlington, Cummins manufactures and assembles engines, carries out testing and runs management operations.

Ingenium Parc is being developed by Darlington Council. Cummins’ new facility will house internal automated storage, offices and a service yard. There will be parking for 230 cars, as well as cycle storage.

The development will be accessed via Salters Lane, connecting to Yarm Road and the nearby A66.

Dominic Dickinson, regional director for the North East at GMI Construction Group, called it “a significant industrial development”, one that drew on “GMI’s extensive experience in delivering complex logistics and manufacturing schemes across the North East”.
