Winvic appointed to design Witton-le-Wear Bridge

Securing its first project under the North East Procurement Organisation Framework, the contractor will oversee essential design and build works to the bridge, which carries the A68 over the River Wear near the village of Witton-le-Wear in County Durham.

Design work is now underway, with completion currently scheduled for summer 2027. Winvic is delivering the project in partnership with design consultant Mott MacDonald.

The design and repair contract was awarded to Winvic for £471,682 in July 2025, although the eventual construction cost has yet to be confirmed.

Built around 1970, the bridge comprises two arched, tapered in-situ reinforced concrete beams supporting a reinforced concrete slab deck.

The proposed scheme will address erosion to the riverbanks and southern embankment near one of the bridge piers.

Changes to the river’s alignment, caused by an upstream gravel bank, have resulted in localised undercutting and damage to the paved apron around the structure.

The northern pier and embankment are also being assessed and are being closely monitored by Durham County Council and its appointed specialists.

Construction works are expected to focus on preventing further erosion, protecting the bridge structure and carrying out refurbishment or replacement works to improve the long-term resilience of the route.

Following the completion of surveys and design work, Winvic will provide Durham County Council with options for the recommended structural repairs and scour protection measures for the southern embankment, extending upstream from the bridge.

The final solution will be determined following detailed river modelling, durability assessments and cost analysis.

The appointment marks Winvic’s first project secured through the NEPO Framework.
